Hayward is again home to a Bay Area golf tradition as the second-generation golf club designer Jesse Ortiz this month launches his new design studio, three years after opening the Bobby Jones Golf Co. to rekindle a tradition going back nearly half a century.
Ortiz, who learned to design and make clubs as a teenager in his father’s shop in San Francisco - and later Oakland and Hayward - took the golf world by storm in the late 1990s with his TriMetal fairway woods, which added traditional weighting to the metal clubs that were taking over the industry at the time.
Ortiz is back with a new company, the Bobby Jones Golf Co., launched in 2004 and now in expanded Hayward headquarters with a new design studio.
"I wanted to do my thing. … I wanted to make high-quality products instead of just products that fit certain price points," Ortiz said.
